Open Source
It's a 10 year old Lenovo M800
I snagged a ~10 year old Lenovo M800 when the local makerspace died. It had a Windows distro of similar vintage, probably 10. Half an hour of some basic techie play, and it’s got Ubuntu on it, but I’m tempted to put BSD on the thing, for reasons.
“A schoolmate of
his once showed him this thing called “Linux” before said schoolmate’s
parents confiscated it. “Open Source” meant it was wide open for
terrorists and pedophiles to get into, and the online consumption
experience needed to be safe for the children.”
…
“The CPU unit has the old AT&T
“Deathstar” logo on it, and is marked “3B1.” About five minutes later the
system is assembled, pluged in, and booting up. John looks at his son and
gestures to the machine while saying “BASIC on those old microcomputers is
fun, but limited. Let me tell you about Unix.”"From the short story B.A.S.I.C. in Finding Interzone.
It’s not the fastest thing, but I’m on it right now and it’s getting the job done. Microshaft would have this thing rendered into scrap metal and sent somewhere overseas to be made into a cellphone. California would want to put it into the same category as an AR-15, and half of this country would have no problems with that. Connecticut is trying to catch up, and all the local makerspaces can do is close up due to declining membership and increasing operational costs.
Nevada is trying to do the same thing, which shows you that authoritarian scumbags are not red or blue, but instead purple. In the meantime, maybe Primm might become an underground software smuggling hub. Someone should install a PirateBox in the Bonnie & Clyde car.
